Our Story

Mr Selladurai Nadar had a vision towards the peanut industry and with a clear vision on his mind during the year 1960 he established a business in this trade by the name of V S Nadar. Mr Selladurai Nadar has first found a place in the heart of the commercial capital of Sri Lanka where he started buying and selling groundnut along with other products related to nuts and sweets. His main focus was on groundnut (peanut) and its related products.
Gaswork street situated in Pettah was a prime location to start such business since it was the hub of businessmen from all round the country who come and purchase their products in wholesale and retails basis. With all difficulties and competition, he managed to achieve his set goals.
At that time Amal Grams was one among the many small time businesses in that location and with its 60 years of experience Amal Gram Store has grown to become one of the leading businesses in that field of business. Mr Anthony Amalraj, the proud son of Mr Selladurai Nadar took over the business and brought even more glory to it by innovating and introducing new products and techniques to its menu and uplifted his father’s name even more in the industry.
During the early stages of Amal Gram Stores, processing of groundnut was done manually by hand involving a lot of manual labor. As time passed by and the demand started increasing on groundnut Mr Selladurai Nadar and his son
Mr Anthony Amalraj innovated a manual machine which was operated by man power to break the groundnut from its shell and separate them according to their sizes. This machine was designed and used solely by Amal gram stores. Due to the lack of manual labor they had to come up with even more effective machine which can operate on its own, there came the innovative idea to introduce motor power machines which produced a lot of output in very little time with the limited man power they had.
The business got stagnated during the conflict period. This is mainly because the local supplies of raw groundnut stopped coming from the ground nut growing areas of Northern and Eastern provinces. This situation almost put a stop the company business but they had other plans to overcome this situation. They inquired and researched on how to get the supplies needed for to face the demands and then came up with a solution to import groundnut from India.
Until such time Amal Gram Stores was solely depending on local supply and resources to meet their demands. Once they got exposed to the Indian market, they then brought even better machinery from India to improve their productivity level and output.
